The Art of Giving: Hyde Park Corner and 67 Blankets Celebrate Nelson Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela day is a momentous occasion across South Africa, with efforts often spanning the whole month of July, where people come together to share the spirit of his kind and giving nature. This energy was wholeheartedly felt at the 67 Blankets Charity Event held at Hyde Park Corner, on Tuesday, 15 July 2025 as part of their two week Nelson Mandela Day celebrations. Celebrities, designers and pet lovers alike gathered together to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and to support our four-legged friends in a creative and interesting effort that highlights animal safety and the beauty of South African design.

67 Blankets, Hyde Park Corner and Nelson Mandela Day

67 Blankets is an organisation that started in December 2013 to honour and celebrate Nelson Mandela day. Their goal is to make everyday into Nelson Mandela day, and spread the love and charitable spirit throughout the year. The movement quickly blossomed and captured the hearts and attentions of celebrities and brands across the world, including KnitWits for Madiba in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and more. The importance of such initiatives is felt and appreciated everywhere and it lays the foundation for the excitement and enthusiasm that surrounds philanthropy in South Africa and beyond.

This time Hyde Park Corner partnered with some of South Africa’s top designers to create beautiful dog houses that people could bid on, in which all proceeds would go to animal shelters that care for homeless dogs. This was a lovely way to ‘pay it forward’ that allowed bidders to potentially get a doghouse for themselves or gift it to someone else who would want it, all while providing care for dogs in need. The very essence of charity. The designers included Anissa Mpungwe Atelier, Desme Designs, Ezoketho, Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs, House of Ole, The Bam Collective and more.

67 Blankets’ Secret Scarves Shhh… Campaign

Another bid was created as part of 67 Blankets’ Secret Scarves Shhh… campaign, where the Morningside Mockingbirds KnitWits handcrafted beautiful scarves that people could bid on in which all the scarves would later be donated to people in need. The importance of giving was felt in the earnest nature of these activities in which people could came together for a cause bigger than themselves to take care of people and animals in need.

The events were a success, with great attendance and fulfilled bids that allowed people to contribute to their communities in whichever ways they could. This is one of many efforts that are hosted to encourage charitability all year round, and this was a perfect way to put it together and foster the art of giving.
