Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters is a Smash Hit

A new and exciting cinematic universe is upon us, and that’s all thanks to Netflix’s new smash hit film, Kpop Demon Hunters. The film was released on Friday, 20 June 2025, and has received a huge outpour of excitement. Social media has been ablaze with fanart, music updates and enthusiasm from fans across the globe who have loved this new release.

What is Kpop Demon Hunters?

As the name suggests, Kpop Demon Hunters is an animated film that follows a three member Kpop girl group called HUNTRIX, as they try to save the world from demons that are looking to steal people’s souls. They are faced with challenge after challenge in their quest to save the world, and their biggest challenge yet is the introduction of a hot, new boy group called The Saja Boys, and they are ready to steal the public’s hearts… and souls. Because they’re demons. HUNTRIX, made up of Rumi, Mira and Zoey must work to take down the Saja Boys, protect the world and keep their fans, but it proves to be no easy feat.

The film features catchy music, beautiful visuals and a star-studded cast including Arden Cho who voices Rumi, Lee Byung Hun who voices Gwi-Ma, and Ahn Hyo Seop who voices the leader of the Saja Boys, Jinu. And the fun does not stop there because three members of the famous Kpop girl group, Twice, lend their voices to a special song on the soundtrack called ‘Takedown’.

Audience Reception

People all over the world have loved this quirky, new film and it has been met with tons of enthusiasm. Fans have made fan art, playlists of the songs from the soundtrack, fan theories and more. Many Kpop fans have appreciated the film for its ability to highlight the fan experience within the Kpop world, showing the excitement of fan events, performances and all the little quirks and moments that make it so fun.

Inspiration for Kpop Demon Hunters

The film takes clear inspiration from the Kpop world, and highlights the fan experience with lightsticks for the different groups, live performances, variety shows and more. It is set in modern Korea, and it showcases and celebrates modern Korean culture and music in an engaging and important way.

According to IndiaTimes, co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, mentioned in an interview that some of the inspiration came from seeing the widespread affection and influence that BTS had on their fans during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Appelhans mentioned that seeing the online concerts that BTS held to connect with fans inspired them to create a film that explored the ideas of connection, and the power of music to heal and bring joy.

The film seems to have achieved exactly that. With its bright colours, upbeat music and intriguing storyline, it’s no wonder that people have flocked to it in droves.
